A Word from Our Pastors

"Welcome to the Signal Mountain Bible Church web site, we're glad you found us! You’ll find we try not to take ourselves too seriously, but we do take our Lord very seriously. Signal Mountain Bible Church is a place of worship where the Word of God is taught. Our goal is not mere knowledge of the Bible, but that we may know Christ and make Him known.

"We are not a building, an institution, or a collection of programs. Signal Mountain Bible Church is people. We are a group of ordinary people committed to the Living Word, Jesus Christ, and to God’s Word, the Scriptures. Our desire is to worship God, to build up the body, and to share the good news of Jesus Christ.

"We would love the opportunity to open the Bible with you and help you discover what it means to be a Christian. We believe God has established Signal Mountain Bible Church for a special ministry to Signal Mountain and Chattanooga. Come and be part of our fellowship."

Gary Phillips: Gary is the founding pastor of SMBC, with a B.A. from Vanderbilt, a Master of Theology (Th.M.) from Dallas Theological Seminary and a Doctorate in Systematic Theology (Th.D.) from Grace Theological Seminary. Gary taught Bible and Philosophy at Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee for 24 years (including the first 15 years of SMBC's existence), leaving the college in 2001 to devote his full attention to the church. Oddly enough, one of the things Gary wants you to know about him is that he can flip bottle caps like frisbees. Gary and his wife Betsy have three grown children: David, Beth and Rebecca.

Tim Schoap: Tim is on his third career, having been a professional musician in Los Angeles, followed by 15 years in computer sales, management, and consulting with IBM. Tim's Bachelor's is in music performance from California State University, Northridge and his Master's is from Dallas Theological Seminary. He came to SMBC as a layman in 1991. In 1997, the church invited him to leave the corporate world and go into full-time ministry. Tim leads in worship, church administration, and missions. He and his wife Bonnie have two grown children, Jonathan and Sarah.
